Autograph letter signed, dated : Naples, 13 February 1870, to Luigi Ronzi in Florence, 1870 Feb. 13.

Saying he has declined to sing in Semiramide at the Rossini festival in Pesaro because he has no more desire to exert himself, that for the same reason he must decline Ronzi's proposal for the Carcano theatre in Milan, that furthermore it would be pointless to pursue an art in which an artist with self-respect is heard only with displeasure, adding that the only opera house into which an old artist should venture is in Paris, where the position is commendably held by others and where, therefore, they have no need of him.
